I tweet quite a bit about the Secrets Of The Super Fit and have surrounded myself with quite a few of these individuals.
Truth is, trying to lock down a fitness formula for Super Fitness is like trying to lift a barbell with one arm behind your back… it’s almost impossible.
But what I have found is that all Super Fit people share one trait, and it all boils down to – MINDSET. It’s not really what they eat, or how they work out, or even their precise strategy. It is their overall approach to life and how they choose to organize their day, making sure to incorporate themselves into it.
I’m not going to lie, some are fanatical. I don’t like to call names, but let’s just say they are extremely zealous and a little looloo about their approach to fitness. From the fiber to carb ratio to the stop-watched rests between sets, they are singular minded and kinda hard to relate to…certainly hard to emulate. Hey…it works for them. But most of my Super Fit friends aren’t so extreme. They have simply decided that they will fit THEMSELVES into their lives and value their own goals enough to make them a priority. What they learned once they started down their road, after they waded through the guilt of not always putting everyone else’s needs ahead of their own (especially difficult if you have children), is that they were happier, more energetic, and had so much MORE to give to their family and friends… not less.
So what is the mindset I’m talking about? It is one of Dedication, Persistence, and Patience. You MUST have all three in order to successfully achieve Super Fitness. Dedication is committing your whole self and effort into a goal. Persistence is continuing the effort, no matter how difficult, even if you fall flat on your face. And Patience is the ability to tolerate the outcome regardless of defeat and disappointment, then brush yourself off and try again.
They have learned that as rewarding as it is to reach their goal, the process is almost better. I mean, I could place a trophy in your hand and say “Good job! You win!” But there’s no meaning in that, no sense of accomplishment. The joy is working towards the goal so that when you get there…wow.
How do YOU get the mindset? You have to want it…really badly. You have to decide that enough is enough, and that you want to feel healthier and happier and look fabulous. You have to be willing to deny yourself things you want and push yourself to do things you don’t want. You have to be willing to stand up to family and friends, who are often resistant at the beginning, and push through the discomfort of growth. If you can do this, then the sky is the limit my friend.
So how do you start? You start with one tiny goal at a time and conquer it. Then you shoot for your next goal, while continuing to incorporate what you learned hitting goal #1. Then you shoot for the next goal, and the next, until the whole thing snowballs. Once you start getting results, it becomes difficult to turn back and those lifestyle changes that were so exhausting at first are now habits! Lovely and seamless habits.
Each Super Fit person has their own path, their own strategy, and their own plan for getting where they want to be. But they all share the Mind Set of stopping at nothing to figure out how to get there.
THEY WON”T QUIT EITHER !!
What a great article.. It’s a pleasure to see that other people like Heather Frey are preaching the same message you hear from me.. Not many, but there are some.
There are many different ways to accomplish goals just as there are figuring out the best way to reduce body fat. You can go with the 4 – 6 meals a day plan, fasting, intermittent fasting, etc. No matter what the goal, patience and a big time reason as to WHY you’re doing what your doing is the key to finishing. But will you ever be finished ? Probably not……….
You’ll know when you find the right path though !!!!
